Ham and cheese is a classic sandwich growing up in the Zollars’ home. I think anyone can agree a good lunch sandwich with some spread hits the spot! These Ham and Cheese Pinwheels are similar to a ham and cheese sandwich but upgraded into a flakey pinwheel. Loaded with mustard dill sauce, sharp white cheese, and any ham you love the most. You need a few ingredients and puff pastry from Jus-Rol. I can’t wait to show you how to make ham and cheese pinwheels!
Flakey Pinwheels
Pinwheels have been making their annual appearance at New Year’s Eve parties, holidays, and Super Bowl gatherings for years. Safe to say this well known appetizer is making its way into snack time for any day of the week! Pinwheels aren’t just for tortillas, I used puff party from my trusted partner Jus-Rol to give this Ham and Cheese pinwheel a face lift. The flakey layers and flavored sauce make for a delightful snack or side kick to your lunch. Not a mustard fan? No problem! Layer your ham and cheese, roll, freeze, cut and bake! I was never a mustard fan growing up, however, the combination with honey and dill was a game changer. Start with a simple ham and cheese pinwheel if you are against some picky eaters.

One Size Doesn’t Fit All
First, make sure ham is safe to add into these snack wheels. Turkey is a great option or even pepperoni. Any meat you choose will be equally delicious. One size doesn’t fit all! I used black forest ham. This ham brings a salty touch with a great balance to sharpen up the sweeter side of the sauce. The thinner the slices the better for this recipe. Typically, I am the early bird at the store. Meaning, I beat the butchers to their job in the mornings so I have to opt for the pre-sliced ham. It is never a bad choice, I just prefer a fresh cut!
The Havarti Cheese
First off, this is a bit of importance when it comes to the melting factor of your cheese. If you are dairy free I recommend Daiya brand cheese. I use this cheese often in my meal prep for clients, one of my favorite cheeses because it melts so well in the oven. Super creamy and you don’t miss out on the cheesy excitement. No one would ever know this is a plant-base cheese either. It melts exactly like regular cheese! The Havarti cheese is light but sharp. It has a nice settle texture and holds up extremely well to the pastry and heaviness of the ham. This is not a specialty cheese, you can find it in in your local deli or with the packaged lunch meats. Lastly, I sprinkled on a little parmesan cheese to give some variety of cheese flavor to the palate and dried chives.
The Process
To start, I sometimes poke holes in my puffy pastry according to directions but I find that when I don’t the layer start to puff up. This happens because air gets trapped inside instead of deflating the puff pastry with fork pokes. Either way, you will end up with a delicious pinwheel with semi crusted cheese edges. My ultimate drool factor scale depends on the out crust layer just as much as the inner cheese layer. Next, I spread on the mustard sauce, layer with 9 slices of cheese and all the meat. Then sprinkle with parmesan cheese and top with dried chives. The last piece, the dried chives are great to use because they aren’t so onion-y for kids to enjoy. To finish the preparing process, I carefully roll tightly wrap in ready to use included parchment paper and finally freeze for about 15 minutes. It is easier to cut for the next steps.
